More Fabulous Achievements in Room 6

Hannah takes great pride in the presentation of all her work. It looks awesome. Abby gets up and 5 a.m. to read and that might be why she is zooming up the reading rocket, so is Ashton. Joseph is a super responsible sports monitor and Jackson has been sharing his expert knowledge of comic life and patiently teaching others how to use it. Amelia got two certificates, one was for being the top ASB banker in our school and the other was for improvement in reading. Jack had two as well. One was for reading and the other was for his fantastic singing when we do the National Anthem in assembly. He is a proud kiwi. Keep up the awesome work room 6.

Teamwork!

We have been learning how to be eco-heroes and look after our planet. Room 6 has been looking closely at the amount of rubbish that is thrown away in the junior block and we have discovered that much of it can be recycled. So, we have to get the message out to the other classes. Here we are in groups planning how we can do this.

Cinderella Poetry Recital

This term we are enjoying lots of myths, fairytales and legends as part of our literacy topic. We have some poems that are based on well known fairy tales. The children have been practising using expression by recording them and then listening to their own voice before trying to improve upon their expression. While Miss Y was home sick she put some of the recordings to pictures. The children will be able to do this themselves soon.

What a fantastic effort everyone put in to dressing up. Room 6 were given Scotland so there was blue and while everywhere and the odd bit of tartan thrown in. Very proud of Joseph as he made a fabulous Scotsman and ended up winning the overall junior prize and he scored himself a goody bag.

On Monday we wrote recounts about the ceremony. Here are some of them-

On Friday room 6 went to the hall to see the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony. Our class was dressed as Scotland. Scotland's colours are blue and white. Jack

On Friday afternoon last week there was a Rugby World Cup opening ceremony. First we sang the National Anthem. Then the cheerleaders did their dance. Next the other dancers went. The Learning Trophy

We have so many awesome learners in Room 6. It is hard to pick just one but that's just what Miss Y had to do last week. Kairyn is new to our school this term but from the day he started he has stood out as a K4's kid. He always gets on with his work, completing tasks in time. He is very helpful, a good role model and a great friend. Well done. Awesome achievement.

Math's Week 8-12 August

This year Maths Week is better than ever, with new challenges, games, and awesome prizes.
The website is http://www.mathsweek.org.nz Our username is room6waiuku. The children know the password. I can't put it up on this blog. If they get asked for a level they need to select level 1 or sometimes it will say level 1/2 Some of the games are too hard to do. I recommend
the daily challenges, Balancing Act and Raining Money for a start.

Week 10 Assembly Award Winners

We had an interesting morning in Room 6 completing the Maths Measurement Team Challenge. The children were in groups of four and they were given a metre ruler and asked to measure different lenghts around the classroom to the nearest metre. None of the team got all the answers right. But, Team 1 got the most answers right and they were finished way before the other teams. The greatest difference between Team 1 and the other teams was that they worked well together, communicating and co-operating. So, they all deserved a certificate. Well done to Jack, Melissa, Joseph and Cheyenne. Myah has been trying harder to get her work done on time and to a satisfactory standard without being distracted. Good stuff Myah.

Book Fair Parade

Room 6 had a lot of interesting characters turn up on Friday afternoon. We had Snow White, Rapanzel, Baa Baa Smart Sheep, Charlottte,a cowboy, skater boy, witch and many many more. We all went up to watch the book fair parade. Micaiah the amazing spider from Charlotte's Web was given first prize in our class by the judges. Super effort.

Pou Pou Artwork

This week is Maori Language Week. We have been learning our pepeha over the last couple of months. We have also been doing some corrugated card artwork inspired by pou pou that are found on the inside walls of te whare whakairo - the carved Maori meeting house at a marae. Pou pou are carvings in the upright slabs that form the solid framework. The carvings are representative of tupuna or ancestors. Have a look at the artworks we have completed so far.

Winning Science Fair Board

Today we went to the Science Fair and we found out that the judges awarded our science inquiry 1st prize in the year 0-2 science category section. We asked what would happen if we changed the amount of baking powder in our pikelets. This was important to know because we have done a lot of cooking in room six so it was of interest to us.

Making Yoghurt - Step by Step

This term the children are being introduced to procedural writing. This is writing step by step instructions of how to do something. Making yoghurt was a good introduction to this as we had to follow the instructions on the packet to make it. It also ties in with our science theme by getting the children thinking about 'change' and how in this example it turned from powder and water to a different consistency. How does this happen? Unfortunatley I have been sick all week... boo hoo... and have not been able to follow up on this questions. But, here is the step by step slideshow.

Eric Carle Inspired Artwork

Eric Carle is a famous author and illustrator and while reading one of his books "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" we because interested in the artwork in it. We read a few more of his books and Abby even brought in a book from home to share. The artwork was similar in all of them. We found he had an awesome website with video tutorials on it that explained how he created his fabulous colourful art http://www.eric-carle.com/slideshow_paint.html and . They are collages. He paints layers of paint on tissue paper with different patterns and then he creates a stencil and cuts out the images piece by piece. We had to adapt his technique. I think the results are amazing. What do you think?

Buzz, buzz, buzzzzzzzz

We have had a little bit of an unplanned bee theme going on in Room 6. First we read 'Willbee the Bumblebee' by the NZ author Craig Smith. It is a very funny story and you can read the words on Craig's website: http://www.craigsmith.co.nz/lyrics-willbee-the-bumblebee.php We were also lucky enough to hear Craig read and sing us the story last week when he visited Waiuku. Recently we read a story called 'Bertha and the Beeman' and we have even examined a dead bumblebee closely under our microscoope. So, now that we knew exactly what they looked like we decided it was time to draw some bees. The children used a computer programme called Kidspix. First they needed to draw the picture with black outlines before they filled in the colour.

Week 11 Assembly Awards

Al-Hayy has been trying really hard in reading making sure that he understands the stories he reads. He moved up to Green reading group. Melissa has also been putting in an awesome effort in writing and has written some great recounts.

Week 9 Cooking. Savoury Corn and Cottage Cheese Muffins

You can find the recipe on Food in a Minute's website or by following
http://www.foodinaminute.co.nz/Recipes/Savoury-Corn-and-Cottage-Cheese-Muffins
We made these on April Fool's day and Miss Yelchich in Room 1 thought that I might have been playing a trick on the children because it was quite spicy. I put cayene pepper in instead of paprika because I didn't have any. We did put in half the amount and most of the children liked them and went back for more and more. Some went running for their water bottles. WOOPS! Sorry!

Super Mathematicians

In Maths, we have been learning that “teen” means one 10 so then we know that a “teen” word is ones plus 10. For example, sixteen means six and 10. Then we went on to learn that “ty” at the end of words means many “tens”. So we know that “sixty” is six tens. The children use ice-block sticks to model this. Check back later for some photos of the class in action with this learning.

Today we made lemonade scones using a recipe from:
http://www.kidspot.co.nz/recipes-for+603+++Lemonade-scones.htmThey were really easy to make. We didn't have self-raising flour so we had to add 4 1/2 tsp of baking powder to the recipe. We talked about temperature and measurments again.
